1. Soyinka Explains Why Buhari’s Anti-Corruption War Won’t Be Won


Professor Wole Soyinka on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari administration will not succeed in its anti-corruption fight until corrupt leaders are held to account. Soyinka challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to go after past Nigerian leaders who have stolen from the country’s treasury.

2. Nigerian Army Rescues Old Man From Boko Haram

Nigerian troops in the Northeast have saved an aged man from the den of terror group Boko Haram during crossfire, the army has announced. Spokesman for the Operation Lafiya Dole, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, revealed that the man was held hostage by the terrorists in Gobara, Gwoza area of Borno state.

3. Buhari Vows To Splash All $320m Abacha Loot On Poor Masses


The Federal Government has announced that the returned $320m Abacha loot would be spent on the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme to support the poor. Declaring open the Eighth Commonwealth Conference of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa on Monday in Abuja, the President, represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said it was one condition given by the Switzerland authorities for the repatriation of the funds.

4. Shiite Protesters Take Over Abuja Federal Secretariat

Shiite protesters on Monday grounded the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja, as they took over the roads in protest against the continued detention of their Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. According to reports, the youth, who were armed with stones, chased away a police team and overturned a traffic warden cabin on the road. They also reportedly injured the Federal Secretariat Divisional Police Crime officer in the face after he asked them to stop harassing motorists.

The Enugu State Police Command on Monday denied report of bomb explosion at an Enugu church on Sunday. Spokesman for the police SP Ebere Amaraizu said there was no bomb blast in any church in the state.

6. Judges Appointment Politicised – CJN

Appointment of judges in the country is now highly politicized according to the Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen. Onnoghen said this on Monday, explaining that some governors would not allow the appointment or allow the names of persons nominated for judicial appointment to be sent to the National Judicial Council for scrutiny if his (governor) names are not on the list.

7. PDP Members Complaining Seem Confused, Says Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin, a member of the House of Representatives, dismissed claims by Kawu Baraje that the new PDP (nPDP) caucus in the ruling All Progressives Congress is being marginalised. The Kano lawmaker, who was part of those who left the PDP for the now ruling party, said every key member of the nPDP nominated a member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC). According to him, if there was any marginalisation, it should be the other way around; nPDP members marginalising themselves.

National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) John Oyegun is unduly interfering in the congresses of the party in Delta state, chieftain of the party Great Ogboru has alleged. Ogboru made this known when he accompanied the Chairman of the Delta Congress Committee to present its report to the party’s National Working Committee. He pointed out that Oyegun’s actions were contrary to the APC guidelines for the congress.

9. Israeli Soldiers Kill 55 Palestinians ‘In Self Defence’

Palestinian officials say Israeli soldiers have killed 55 people and wounded 2,700 in the deadliest violence in Gaza since 2014. But Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his troops was acting in self-defence against Hamas, Islamist rulers in Gaza. The latest violence between these two rivals followed the US opening of a controversial embassy in Jerusalem.

10. Babayaro, Ugbade React To Rohr’s 30-Man World Cup Squad

Former internationals Emmanuel Babayaro and Nduka Ugbade are satisfied with Nigeria’s 30-man provisional list for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Leading the pack is captain Mikel Obi, goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, defenders Abdullahi Shehu, Elderson Echiejile and Leon Balogun Others are Ogenyi Onazi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Ahmed Musa and Victor Moses.
