1. Abiola’s Opponent Tofa Reacts To FG Declaration In Cryptic Message

The candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Bashir Tofa, has sent a coded message on the recognition of his rival by President Muhammadu Buhari. Commenting on Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and the posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) to MKO Abiola, the presumed winner, Tofa replied: “May God help Nigeria.”

President Buhari on Thursday directed the Federal Ministry of Justice to take immediate steps to publish the Presidential Order on June 12, to be observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria in the Federal Gazette. This was made known in statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu.

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce the results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. The federal lawmakers made the call a day after President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 to replace May 29 as Democracy Day.

The Senate has set up an investigation into the alleged rape and torture of women in IDP camps by Nigerian soldiers in the Northeast. Amnesty International in a report which was released in May with the title: ‘They Betrayed Us’, alleged that Nigerian soldiers rape and torture women in IDP camps.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favour of Chairman of Innoson Motors, Innocent Chukwuma, in his case with Guaranty Trust Bank. According to a statement released on Thursday by Cornel Osigwe, Innoson Group’s head of corporate communications, the supreme court struck out the motion for stay of execution of the Enugu court of appeal order that GT Bank pays N6 billion into an interest yielding account.

7. Osinbajo’s Chopper Makes Emergency Landing

The helicopter conveying Vice President Yemi Osinbajo from the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, reportedly made a forced landing a few seconds after take-off. Osinbajo was in the school for the graduation ceremony of Senior Division Course 1/2018 participants.

Senate President Bukola Saraki has sent a response letter to the Nigeria Police Force over their investigation into the Offa bank robbery that left over 30 people dead. The Police had asked the Senate President to state his position in writing.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Lasun, has declared his intention to contest for the September 22 governorship election in Osun state. The Deputy Speaker made the declaration at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Osogbo on Thursday.

The United Kingdom chapter of the ruling APC has dismissed insinuations that President Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day to score political point ahead of 2019 elections. The chapter was reacting to claims by the PDP that Buhari was desperate to win next year’s election and hence his declaration of the day to honour the late MKO Abiola.
