1. Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon on Sunday said he prays Nigeria does not experience another Civil War. The former Head of State expressed regret over the numerous problems facing the country in recent times, especially the widespread security challenges and killings which he described as worrisome, at a special prayer summit in Yenagoa.
2. Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, yesterday warned Nigerians against embracing the coalition formed by politicians in a bid to rescue Nigeria.
Soyinka, while speaking at the 80th Posthumous Birthday celebration of late activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, in Ikeja, Lagos, said the nation’s democracy was under threat, noting that members of the newly formed coalition were enemies of democracy.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a private consultant, Victor Uwajeh, being accused of fraud, to trace and recover undeclared assets and proceeds of fraud as part of the ongoing fight against corruption in the country. The London based Nigerian private investigator was said to be facing a four-count charge the Federal Government preferred against him for attempting to obtain money through fraudulent means from Senator Andy Uba, who is representing Anambra South Senatorial District.
4. The presidency, yesterday, alleged political motif in some of the killings in the Middle Belt, even as it dismissed the opposition to President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term bid, saying Nigerians have enough evidence to re-elect the President.
Presidential spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, while dismissing the third force movement as amorphous, said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP would require eight to 12 years to reform itself to pose as a credible opposition to any government.
5. A parent of one of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls was on Sunday killed while others severely injured in a fatal road accident. The incident happened while the parents while traveling in convoy From Chibok in Borno State to Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, where the majority of the girls who have been released by Boko Haram jihadists are studying at the American University of Nigeria.
6. No fewer than 16 persons were, yesterday, killed in Bama, Borno State, and Kpanche in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
While four persons were killed in suicide bombing on a mosque in Bama, including the two suicide bombers, with 10 others sustaining injuries, 12 were slaughtered at Kpanche in inter-communal conflicts.
7. Over 12 persons were killed and others injured when gunmen, at 5:30a.m. yesterday, besieged Kpanche community of Bassa Local Government Area.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said only four persons died, adding that a combined team of Army and Police promptly responded to distress call and repelled the attackers, killing four of them in the process.
8. President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Rev. Ayokunle Olasupo, has expressed worries that herdsmen, Boko Haram and other militia groups appear to be more tactical than the country’s security agencies, saying there was need for Christians to take up self-defence to survive in the country.
Olasupo, who also is the President of Nigerian Baptist Convention, NBC, further urged Christians, especially Baptists, to participate in politics, noting that Nigeria will only change when Christians take over leadership positions.
9. Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele,on Sunday, confirmed the recovery of the sum of US$322,515,931.83 Abacha funds from the Swiss Government into a special account in the CBN.
The funds, according to her, have been earmarked for the National Social Safety Nets programme of the Government.
