[News] Children’s Day: Mrs Olayinka Ojomo, Declared That Nigerian Government Has No Clear-Cut Policy To Protect Girl-Child
A right activist, Mrs Olayinka Ojomo, has declared that Nigerian government has no clear-cut policy to protect the girl-child, insisting that young girls are largely vulnerable in the country.
Ojomo, who is the Executive Director of Girl Child Rights Awareness Initiative in Africa disclosed this in an interview with Daily Post, while speaking on this year Children’s Day.
She noted that conscious efforts to build sustainable nationhood through the protection of the girl-child is practically missing in Nigeria, adding that the government must look inward and do the needful.
According to her, the calamity that befell the country since 2014, when over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram militants exposed the “Degree of insensitivity of Nigerian government towards the girl-child “.
She argued that no nation attains certain level of development and build an egalitarian society that guarantees sustainable peace and tranquility without special policies to “guide and guard the girl-child. ”
The right activist explained that the recent abduction of over 100 girls from Dapchi in Yobe State, after the outcry and condemnations that trailed the unfortunate event in Chibok further showed that the government does not care about the girl-child.
” Our nation urgently requires a paradigm shift in policy formation towards the girl-child, the future of our country is bleak if we continue this way without a definite step to protect these fragile beings.
“The two terrible occurrences in Chibok and Dapchi towns of Borno, Yobe respectively are indeed a national tragedy to say the least.
“Our nation cannot sustain this nationhood if the political class fails to take necessary steps to protect the girl-child.
” However, I congratulate Nigerian children on this occasion of their day, may God keep them for better future “, she said.
