1. Buhari Says: "I Am Alright" After Returning From UK Medical Trip
President Muhammadu Buhari on his arrival at the airport in Abuja on Friday Evening from medical trip to London said he is in good condition. President Buhari returned to Abuja from the United Kingdom, following a four-day medical trip to the United Kingdom. When asked on by journalists why he arrived on Friday after his schedule of returning on Saturday, the President said his arrival is not earlier than expected.
2. Witness Narrates How He Paid Evans £223,000 As Ransom
A witness has told Lagos High Court he paid suspected kidnapper Evans £223,000 for the ransom of his boss, Donatus Duru. Evans and four others are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping before Hakeem Oshodi, a judge of the Ikeja Division of the Court. The testimony of the third prosecution witness, Uchenna Okeagwu, was heard on Friday.
3. Tragedy Hits CAN As Christian Body Loses General Secretary
General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Reverend Musa Asake has passed away in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness. CAN, the umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria, confirmed Asake’s demise in a statement.
4. President Buhari Condoles With CAN Over Asake’s Death
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday sympathised with the Christian community in Nigeria over the death of the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev Musa Asake. Concise News had reported that Asake passed away in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness. He was 66. Asake had two weeks ago led a nationwide protest against the killing of Christians by suspected herdsmen in parts of the country.
5. Supreme Court Upholds Gov. Abubakar’s Election
Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking to remove Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar from office. The APC chieftain, Abdullahi Tanko Orlando, had earlier challenged the outcome of the party’s 2015 gubernatorial primaries, taking it up to the Supreme Court. The presiding judge, Justice Utterle, maintained among other things that one cannot bring pre-election matters after election has been conducted.
6. FG Pays 14 Whistleblowers N439m
The federal government has paid another set of 14 whistleblowers the sum of N439.276 million for providing tips on tax evaders. Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who briefed the press on Friday, in Abuja, said the payment was made this week, after the government received the sum of N13.8 billion from the affected tax evaders, mainly corporate organizations, based on tips by the whistle blowers.
7. NJC Recommends Appointment Of 21 State Judges
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the appointment of 21 candidates for the position of state judges. Chaired by Justice Walter Onnoghen, the NJC recommends that the 21 candidates take position as Heads of Courts and Judicial Officers for the Federal/State High Courts and the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The council in a statement on Friday said this decision was reached after the 86th meeting of the council held on 8th and 9th May 2018.
8. Thugs Set Imo APC Secretariat On Fire
Political thugs on Friday set the party secretariat of Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on fire. It was gathered that the fire only affected the internal parts of the secretariat building, which is located at the Imo State University junction, along Okigwe road in Owerri. According to reports, secretarial equipment, including files and documents, were destroyed in the inferno.
9. Ekiti 2018: Olusola Picks Ogunsakin As Running Mate
The Peopes Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate for the July 14 Ekiti governorship election, Prof. Kolapo Olusola has picked Kazeem Deji-Ogunsakin as his running mate. Ogunsakin, a native of Ado Ekiti, is the immediate past Chairman of Ado Ekiti Local Government. He is currently the Head of Due Process unit at the governor’s office.
10. Court Stops Rivers APC LG Congress
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has stopped the All Progressives Congress Local Government Congress earlier scheduled for Saturday, May 12. Justice Chiwendu Nwaogu gave the ruling in Port Harcourt on Friday after the Police quelled a riot by unknown persons within the court premises. The riot led to a temporary closure of the State’s Judiciary Complex and the brutalisation of some journalists, litigants and lawyers by thugs around the court premises.
