[Sport News] 2018 World Cup: Ahmed Musa Brings Nigeria Back To Life In Russia
Ahmed Musa struck two amazing goals and hit the woodwork as the Super Eagles recovered from their loss to Croatia to beat Iceland 2-0 on Friday in a Group D game at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.
With this win, the Eagles will fly into their last match with Argentina with a chance of progressing to the last 16.
The three-time African champions are now second in the group on three points, three behind leaders Croatia, who have qualified for the second round, and two ahead of Iceland and Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
The two-time world champions slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday and now find themselves on the brink of early elimination from the tournament.
Musa strikes tantalising opener
Nigeria went in front in the 49th minute thanks to an exquisite finish from the Leicester City striker, who delightfully controlled a beautiful cross from Moses with the outside of his boot before ripping in a half-volley past Hannes Halldorsson.
Nigeria were not done. They went in search of more goals, stringing together some sharp, swift passes.
At this point, it was only a matter of time for the second to come.
Musa scores fourth World Cup goal
The former CSKA of Moscow forward blitzed down the left channel, taking a long pass in his stride before powering home in the 75th minute.
Musa is now Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history.
But there was drama towards the end.
Substitute Tyronne Ebuehi appeared to have tripped Alfred Finnbogason in the box. Referee Matthew Conger initially did not buy Finnbogason’s call for penalty. He needed the assistance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The decision went in favour of Iceland.
Uzoho and ball go the wrong ways
Gylfi Sigurdsson took a two-step run up, tried to place it in the top-right corner but shoots it over the bar to the delight of the Nigerians.
