1. FG Reacts To Ex-President Obasanjo’s Allegations

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said the federal government will not be distracted by frivolous allegations made to divert attention from President Muhammadu Buhari’s achievements. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday, Mohammed said ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s “allegations” were meant to shore up support for a “waning and egotistical cause.”

2. Buhari Govt Plotting To Arrest Me, Ex-President Obasanjo Alleges

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of plotting to indict him. Obasanjo, a top critic of the Buhari government, who had advised the president against seeking a second term, alleged that the government wanted to silence him from expressing his concerns about the state of the nation. He made this known in a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern at alarm raised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the purported plot by the federal government to arrest him. Abubakar, who was vice president in the Obasanjo administration, said he received with serious concern the purported alert raised by Obasanjo and appealed to President Buhari to call the security agencies to order in order to douse the tension in the land. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that President Muhammdu Buhari cannot seize his international passport because of the international community. Obasanjo said the President had plans to get him arrested and detain him just as a former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha did to him. Obasanjo in a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday alleged that the government wanted to silence him from expressing his concerns about the state of the nation.

5. VPs Who Complete President’s Tenure Can No Longer Run For President Twice

A vice president who completes the term of a president is not eligible to run for the office of the President more than once, according to a constitutional amendment signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday. The law also stipulates same to a deputy governor who completes the term of a state governor. The President’s aide on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, made this known at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

6. No Federal Public Holiday On June 12 This Year – Buhari

June 12, 2018 will not be marked as a public holiday following the day’s declaration as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day, President Muhammadu Buhari administration said on Friday. According to the government, while it will not be marked this year, June 12 “in future years will replace May 29th as a national public holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day.” This was made known on the federal government’s official Twitter handle on Friday.

7. Buhari Invites Soyinka, Falana, Others To GCFR Conferment On MKO

President Muhammadu Buhari has invited key players of June 12 struggle to the conferment of posthumous Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on late Moshood Abiola. Among the top key players invited by President Buhari include novelist Wole Soyinka and Femi Falana (SAN). This was disclosed on Friday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha in a statement on Friday.

8. Innoson Retracts Claim On Supreme Court Victory

Chairman of Innoson Motors, Dr Innocent Chukwuma, has retracted his declaration on social media that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has ordered GTBank to pay him N14bn within 14 days. Innoson had earlier on Thursday caused a social media storm by claiming that Supreme Court had ruled in his favour for GTBank to pay him N14bn. According to report, the retraction was advised by Innoson’s lawyers who fear that contempt of court charges on defaming the Supreme Court may be brought against him.

9. U.S. Announces $102m Humanitarian Assistance To Nigeria

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, has announced the sum of $102 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria. The funds will be administered primarily through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) offices of Food for Peace (FFP) and Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), as well as the U.S. State Department’s Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration.

10. Gunmen Kidnap 23 Travelers In Kaduna

Unknown gunmen have kidnapped 23 persons traveling on a highway in the troubled Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna state. The victims include a nursing mother and a kid, Mohammed Kebi told the news agency, PRNigeria on Friday. Kebi, a commercial driver, who escaped the scene of the kidnap, said about five vehicles were intercepted during the abduction.

Senator Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) has said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is sick and “suffering from a dreadful continental abnormality.” Melaye made this known while speaking on Channels TV programme on Friday. Melaye said he does not have a problem with the party, “but my party may have a problem with Nigerians, because of the way it is presently being run.

12. Shakhtar Signs Nigerian Striker From Man City

Shakhtar Donetsk have signed Nigerian international striker Olarenwaju Kayode in a five-year deal from Manchester City. Kayode did not play a single game for the Citizens despite his awe-inspiring form at Austria Vien that caught the attention of the English Premier League outfit. In August 2017, the Super Eagles forward signed a four-year contract with City, but was immediately shipped out on loan to Spanish La Liga side Girona where he played 12 league games without finding the back of the net.

US President Donald Trump says he wants Russia to rejoin the G7 group of key industrialised nations. Russia was expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea, bu Trump said he wanted the country readmitted. Other G7 nations, though, said they remain opposed and it is only one of the issues that they disagree with Trump on. The G7 summit, which groups Canada, the US, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, is being held in the town of La Malbaie in Quebec, Canada.
