Spain crashed out of the 2018 World Cup on Sunday after losing 4-3 on penalties to hosts Russia in a round of 16 clash played in Moscow.

Sergei Ignashevich’s own goal in the 12th minute gave the Spaniards the lead but Russia leveled scores when Artem Dzyuba slammed home from the spot, four minutes to the end of the first half.

Both teams could not find the back of the net during regulation and extra times, resulting in a shot-out.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev used his left foot to stop Iago Aspas’s fifth attempt to send the home fans into raptures as the country progressed to the last eight.
