1. INEC To Suspend Continuous Voter Registration Aug 17

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Friday that it would suspend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) on August 17. The commission disclosed this in a statement in Abuja issued by National Commissioner and Chairman, information and Voter Education Committee, Prince Solomon Soyebi. Soyebi, however, said that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would continue until a week to the commencement of general elections, Feb. 16, 2019.


2. Supreme Court Discharges Saraki Of False Assets Declaration

The Supreme Court in Nigeria on Friday discharged Senate President Bukola Saraki of the remaining three charges against him in the case of false declaration of assets. The federal government instituted the charges against Saraki before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Concise News gathered that the apex court upheld Saraki’s appeal in a lead judgment delivered by Justice Centus Nweze.

3. Saraki Reacts To Supreme Court Victory


Nigeria’s number three citizen Senator Bukola Saraki has lauded the Supreme Court for clearing him of corruption allegations. The highest court on Friday discharged Saraki of the remaining three charges against him in the case of false declaration of assets. Saraki, former governor of Kwara state, had filed an appeal at the apex court to challenge the ruling of the Court of Appeal which asked the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to try him on three of the 18 counts brought against him by the EFCC.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as “triumph of justice’’ Friday’s Supreme Court judgment, dismissing the false asset declaration charges against Senate President Bukola Saraki. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, the party said that the verdict had reinforced Nigerians’ confidence in the judiciary.

5. Supreme Court Affirms Ugwuanyi As Enugu Governor

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as Governor of Enugu state, Southeast Nigeria. The ruling was unanimously backed by judges on the panel. The apex court affirmed Ugwuanyi’s victory and dismissed the appeal filed by Senator Abyogu Eze challenging the election for lacking in merit.

6. Ayogu Eze Congratulates Ugwuanyi On Supreme Court Victory

Senator Ayogu Eze has called Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to congratulate him after the Supreme Court victory on the prolonged legal tussle for the Enugu State guber seat. The Supreme Court had earlier on Friday dismissed Ayogu’s suit seeking to sack Ugwuanyi. Ayogu, in a statement he personally signed, extended a hand of fellowship to Gov. Ugwuanyi.

Renowned professor of law Itse Sagay has suggested that aggrieved members of the ruling All progressives Congress (APC), who formed the Reformed APC, are like killer herdsmen. The faction was formed on Wednesday, with Buba Galadima named as Chairman. And Sagay, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), was reacting to the emergence of the APC faction.

8. Police Dismiss Officer Who Killed Corps Member In Abuja

Police authorities have sacked their personnel, Inspector Benjamin Peters, who killed a corps member, Angela Igwetu, in Abuja on Wednesday. The killer cop has also been arraigned in court over the incident. Igwetu, who was billed to pass out of the compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, was shot dead by a trigger-happy policeman in the morning.

9. Buhari Vows To Punish Politicians Causing Crisis In Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said his administration was determined to identify and punish politicians promoting violence in the country. Nigeria’s commander in chief said this at the closing events of the 2018 Army Day celebrations in Monguno, Borno state. Buhari said solution was being found to the deadly clashes between farmers and herdsmen, and whosoever is found culpable would be brought to justice.

10. Melaye Sings PDP Praises In New Song, Mocks APC (Video)

Senator Dino Melaye has hinted at imminent return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a new song video and mocked the All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmaker who represents the people of Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly posted a shot video of him singing praises of PDP and mocking the APC which he said had suffered him.

11. Court Grants Ex-Governor Suswam N500m Bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted former governor of Benue state Gabriel Suswam bail in the sum of N500 million and one surety in like sum. He was granted bail after the federal government arraigned him on a fresh three-count charge, bordering on illegal possession of firearms and money laundering.

12. Five Arrested In Connection With Policemen Killing

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of seven policemen in Galadimawa, Abuja. Concise News reported that the suspected armed men were stopped for search by the police when they shot the officers. However, the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement on Friday said investigations were ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved in the brutal killing of the riot policemen.

13. France Send Uruguay Packing From Russia

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored both goals as France subdued stubborn Uruguay 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia. Varane brilliantly headed home from Griezmann free-kick to give France the lead five minutes from half-time. They will face Belgium in the semi-finals in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

14. Belgium Stun Brazil To Book Semi-final Clash With France

Belgium dashed Brazil’s hopes of winning a sixth World Cup title with a 2-1 win in Kazan and booked a semi-final clash against France. Fernandinho turned a corner into his own net to put Belgium in front, and Kevin De Bruyne lashed home a brilliant 20-yard rocket from the Lukaku’s pass. Brazil’s Renato Augusto headed in Marcelo’s cross, but Belgium held on to see of the game at 2-1. The Red Devils will now meet France for a place in the final on Tuesday.
